Halo 3 Achievement Glitch?

I was playing Xbox live at my friends house, and we were playing Halo 3. He really wanted the Triple Kill and overkill achievements, so he set up a boosting team (I know it's bad but some people are desperate). I was playing and we all standed in a line so he could kill us. He killed all four of us, then he waited for the achievement to work. One popped up, Overkill. He was confused, as was I, so we finished the game normally, but near the end, another achievement popped up. Triple Kill. Somehow, it didn't recognize the Triple Kill before. Has this happened to you, and how did it happen?
