Prince of Persia Classic Review

Prince of Persia Classic is a contemporary video game adaptation to the original Prince of Persia video game. The initial Prince of Persia was released on the Apple computer in 1989, and the new iteration is available on Xbox live marketplace. In terms of the storyline, both versions of the game are identical. The protagonist is the Prince, and he will be attempting to rescue the Princess. Gamers will be in control of the Prince throughout the duration of the game; furthermore, the Princess is being held hostage by the nefarious Jaffar. Unfortunately, the perverse Jaffar plans on coercing the Princess to marry him in one hour. I have heard of arranged marriages but come on. Would you really want to marry someone who detests you? Probably not. Shame on you Jaffar. The plot is fairly mundane; it is nothing that will make your jaw hit the floor by any stretch of the imagination. The gameplay is all about jumping, running, and swordplay. Since Prince of Persia Classic is a remake of the original, do not expect next generation visuals. The graphics are a significant upgrade from the Prince of Persia that was on the Apple computer, but they are not amazing. Players will experience the game on a two dimensional environment (ala Castlevania). You will encounter a myriad of trapped doors, hazardous spikes, and deadly blades. Jumping from platform to platform makes up a great deal of the gameplay (too much for my taste). Fortunately, the Prince has a bevy of maneuvers at his disposal to circumvent the palace. He will be able to perform a wide variety of acrobatics in the game that will make your journey easier. The controls in Prince of Persia Classic are somewhat vexing. You cannot use the analog stick at all in the game; consequently, you will be floundering during critical points in Prince of Persia Classic. Momentum seems to frequently alter the way the Prince moves. As a result, lining up jumps can be more arduous in Prince of Persia Classic than in Tomb Raider. Most if not all of the combat entailed in the game revolve around a one on one sword fight. There are a few number of these gameplay elements in the game, and they require some skill to be victorious. Sword fighting boils down to blocking and attacking. Vigorously attacking, will make gamers suffer the consequences. Excessive blocking will result in a game over. Finding a consummate balance between attacking and blocking is the only way to be triumphant. Even though there is not much fighting in the game, it is a nice change of pace from the jumping and running. Checkpoints are available in the game, so it is possible to get to the end without losing your hair. Prince of Persia Classic does manage to keep the challenge of the original game intact for the Xbox 360 version. Some would argue that the game is impossible to beat. The animations are not bad. There is very little audio in the game; however, various scenes do an serviceable job of telling the story. Without giving anything away, there are two endings in Prince of Persia Classic. The first on being if the player completes the game in under one hour; the second being if players finish the game over an hour. The game is not as brilliant as the Prince of Persia games on the Xbox and PlayStation 2, but it has its moments. Overall, Prince of Persia Classic is video game that pays homage to a groundbreaking game from 1989. If you are a Prince of Persia fan, then you will find this game to be fairly enjoyable.
