Games for Windows and Xbox Live?

I have an XBOX Live Gold Membership and Now I bought Universe at War for my PC. And I have to sign up for Games for Windows Live. Do the two go together or do I have to make and pay for a whole separate thing?

most online games are free with the exception of mmorpgs. you don't need to pay for windows live. its free and you should have gotten an id with you gamertag.
