Turn based RPG's like Dragon Quest (on a console)?
I really want a new rpg to play but it seems like good, classic turn based games are out, at least on consoles. My favorite game is Dragon Warrior VII; I love its story line and that there are easily 100+ hours of gameplay. I also loved VIII (I loved the nice but simple graphics and the open world) and I tried playing IV on the DS but I am not a big fan of playing on a hand held (I was so upset when they announced IX would be relase on the DS). I also love both Kingdom Hearts, and Final Fantasy is okay but the world is a bit too closed and linear for me. I also played Fable 1 & 2 and I enjoyed it but I prefer a more classic rpg. Can anyone suggest a good game for me based off this? A big, open world is pretty important to me - I like to explore and I love side quests. I am fine with PS1 (good graphics are nice, but not a big requirement in RPG's for me) or PS2, and xbox 360. Thanks!
Well, I am like you, only I don't typically like turn-based RPG's. However, there was one recently that I played and fell in love with. The turn-based RPG The Last Remnant didn't get much love from the critics, but most of the people who have played it love it.
The storyline itself is very short and intricate, but there are tons of side-quests. The game makes use of a system called battle rank to keep you from making boss fights way too easy for yourself by getting to level thirty to eliminate a level five boss or something of the like. There's also some nice downloadable content (at least two that are completely free) that even I haven't completely conquered yet. The world of Last Remnant is vast and you can find so many things out there once you get a "buddy" from a sidequest.
The graphics are all right, much better if you download it to your XBox's hard drive and it cuts down on the nasty load screen waiting that can easily be cut from thirty seconds to five.
The only complaints I have for the game are the size of the text and some of the storyline, but I won't go into that. Hope this helps you make a good decision!

Three Amazing RPGs
No matter which game system it is that you own, if you are a fan of role playing games, you can find something to play. From dragons and sorcerers to the mushroom kingdom, RPGs have come in all shapes and sizes and include some of the most beloved video game characters of all time. Here are some of the best RPGs that are currently on the market.
Borderlands. This game is a mix of first person shooter action and RPG elements. The story is about a group of people looking for a mysterious vault and the treasure that lies within. After choosing a class of player, you will be hunt down skags, bandits and blow away bosses in a bid to try and uncover the vault. Leveling up brings along perks that can be added to a skill tree so that your player becomes more powerful. And if you like weapons, there are millions to choose from as the weapons in the game are randomly generated to produce millions of different ones to choose from. The game is available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Dragon Quest. For those looking to have a more traditional RPG quest to conquer, Dragon Quest is where you want to be. The world of Dragon Quest is filled with traditional role playing game staples like dragons, wizards and good vs. evil. There are many games to choose from because this series is one of the originals. If you want to play one of the best, check out Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2. This game features a world that is vast and a story that is deep. The game play elements are going to be instantly familiar to anyone who has played an RPG in the past, but the graphics, style and the characters will pull the player into the huge world and make them want to level up and beat the sorcerer who has cursed the world.
For those who want a little levity with their RPGs, try out the fantastic Mario and Luigi games. The original game was on the Gameboy Advance, while the two follow-ups have been on the Nintendo DS. All of the games share the same basic game play mechanics, with the player controlling both Mario and Luigi in battle. All of the battles in the game are timing based and the player can even get hits in when the villains attack. It is one of the hallmarks of the game and makes the battles even more fun to work through.
The thing about RPGs is that the player can take on the role of the character and play through the game as if they were in the middle of the action. Controlling a group of players in Dragon Quest or shooting up a gang of raiders in Borderlands is made more interesting by the leveling up and skill set mechanics. Though these two require that you have a TV near by to actually play, the great thing about a handheld RPG like Mario and Luigi is that you can experience the fun of the game from your bunk bed or an airplane or anywhere you can think of.
