Ps3 owners: Is 1080P viewing on the xbox 360, microsoft's version of blue ray?

I've read more and more reports saying the Blueray would NOT last as long as DVD did because digtal downloads are coming much more popular. More Video on Demand services are coming out, which would weaken the use of blue ray playing.

Netflix has just made instant 1080P viewing on the xbox 360, ( though you do need a subcription to netflix), but with that the xbox 360 wouldn't *need* blue ray would it? ( i'm just asking).

The only thing I could see blue ray being of use then is the amount of storage to create games but If that was to happen then couldn't we just use the now, non -existant HD DVD which is more affordable?

I just wanted to see your thoughts.

Blu-Ray is gonna be around for quite a while my friend.

The biggest problem with your idea is bandwith, and that is mentioned in the comments as well. You'd need a fast internet connection to make digital downloading worthwile for the consumer and not everyone has access to consistent, quality, high-speed internet sufficient enough to quickly download these HD movies. So, Blu-Ray is the next best thing for them. Until 15 Mbps internet speed is availabe to every backroad, doghouse, and outhouse along with an affordable pricetag, it won't replace Blu-Ray that quickly.

Also, many people prefer the physical disc as they can watch the movie whenever they want wherever they want, instead of wating for downloads and limiting it to one or two areas at most. Some people like to show off the massive collection of movie discs as well.

Digital downloads are a nice alternative, but not everyone is gonna just accept them right away because it seem simpler. This may be surprising to you, but it really isn't practical for a lot of people. They prefer a disc of some sort, and Blu-Ray is the best solution. It offers 25 GB of space per layer (only 15 GB per layer for HD-DVD) and are the most durable, scratch resistant disc you can buy.

You bring a good point on the Blu-Ray. Its benefit is storage, regardless if its for games, movies, or other data. And when it comes to HD gaming these days, disc space is a plus, so Blu-Ray is the winner. Again, the durability and scratch resistance of the disc is a big plus too. Costs are almost irrelevant. HD-DVD had its chance, and lost.
